Citizens are appointed to the Public Art Commission by the Mayor for the purpose of establishing public art philosophy and developing a public art plan for the City, monitoring the public art budget and recommending funding allocations for public art within City facilities, developing guidelines for selecting artwork, seeking private and governmental funding for public art, and developing educational, promotional projects for public arts programming. PAC meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Art in the Parks

Organized by the Public Art Commission, the Art in the Parks Program works in conjunction with the Commission's goal to enhance the experience of park users and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods while increasing public awareness and appreciation for art.

Visiting artist Peter Inriq is the creator of Ames' most recognized Art in the Parks project. In the fall of 2011, Mr. Inriq shared his passion and expertise with the citizens of Ames through the making of three stone landmarks called inuksuk. Mr. Irniq constructed three Inuksuit during his visit from September 18 to October 1, 2011, at Brookside Park, Emma McCarthy Lee Park, and Ada Hayden Heritage Park.

The City Council, Public Art Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, and City staff invites you to enjoy our City's beautiful park system and encourages you to experience the Art in the Parks Program!

Neighborhood Sculpture Program

The Public Art Commission is committed to creating a visual and aesthetic environment that incorporates art into the lives of all Ames citizens. One way that the Commission does this is through the Neighborhood Sculpture Program. If your neighborhood is interested in acquiring a sculpture for outdoor display, follow the link below for more information:
