Ames Veterans Memorial

Ames Veterans Memorial wall and walkway

The Ames Veterans Memorial is located at 500 Grand Avenue (northeast corner of Grand Avenue and 5th Street)

Symbols of Honor

The memorial features three symbolic representations of American values:

  • Strength – represented by the eagle
  • Unity – represented by the flag
  • Peace – represented by the dove

A star etched into the concrete symbolizes the six branches of the U.S. military:

  • Air Force
  • Army
  • Coast Guard
  • Marines
  • Merchant Marines
  • Navy

Surrounding sandstone benches—six in total—also honor each branch. The name of each branch is etched on the side of a corresponding block.

History of the Memorial

The idea for a veterans memorial in Ames was first proposed in 2001 to the Ames Patriotic Council. In response, the council formed the Ames Veterans Memorial Committee by inviting interested community members to join.

The committee approached the Ames City Council to share its plans and gain support. A partnership with the Public Art Commission provided additional artistic guidance and experience. While the Ames Foundation initially managed donations for the memorial, the City of Ames now oversees contributions, care, and ongoing maintenance.

About the Artist

The memorial was created by Christopher B. Bennett, an Iowa-born sculptor (b. 1953) who has worked professionally since 1979. His public sculptures are featured throughout the state. The memorial—titled “Descending Strength, Ascending Peace—can be viewed in a photo gallery on his website: bennettstudio.com
