Recreation Center

Staff attended a tour of central Iowa facilities in May that was arranged by Discover Ames. The Ames City Council appropriated $100,000 to hire a consultant to help identify potential locations, develop conceptual plans, and provide capital and operational cost estimates. Some potential features considered in an indoor recreation center include a walking track, basketball and pickleball courts, a soccer pitch and multi-purpose space.

The rec center could cost between $12 to $15 million.

Fire Station No. 4

In 2024, staff began exploring a nontraditional approach to establishing a fourth fire station to better serve north Ames. Recognizing the community’s need for improved response times, staff considered building a single-family home that could house a fire crew and engine. The home could later be sold, with proceeds funding the construction of the fourth fire station. Staff continues to explore future land opportunities and alternative solutions for serving north Ames.
