Shared Use Paths

Shared Use Paths

Repair and maintenance of almost 46 miles of shared use paths.  Shared use paths are wider than traditional sidewalks and are intended for multimodal users.  The City recognizes that our citizens place a high value on the use of shared use paths for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Maintenance

The maintenance of the shared use path system within the City of Ames falls under the jurisdiction of several different entities including the City of Ames, Iowa State University, the Ames Community Schools, and private property owners.

The City plans joint sealing and seal coating operations on asphalt shared use paths approximately every 5 years if path conditions indicate it is necessary.  Concrete shared use paths receive minor patching and joint grinding or replacement to restore riding surfaces.  Shared use paths are swept annually or as necessary to remove debris.

Walk Bike Roll is a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan that developed recommendations for paths, sidewalks, bikeways, and street crossings. The plan is working to make Ames a place where walking, biking, and rolling is safe, comfortable, and easy to use for everyone in Ames, regardless of age and ability.  Read more on about the Walk Bike Roll

A second portion of the Walk Bike Roll project included a Wayfinding system for shared use paths providing direction throughout Ames for users. The installation of the wayfinding signs is anticipated in Spring/Summer 2025. Read more about Ames Wayfinding Guidelines.(PDF, 17MB)
