AMES, Iowa – The City of Ames Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) joined several other organizations in hosting “A Glimpse Inside,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. This one-day event showcases historic and architectural resources at 10 locations in Ames’ Old Town National Register Historic Districts and Main Street. The event is free and open to the public.
Collaborating partners include Old Town Neighborhood Association, KHOI Community Radio, Ames History Museum, and Downtown Ames. The event received funding through HPC and the Discover Ames Community Grant Program. It was developed by the volunteer Glimpse Inside Organizers.
“Participants can begin their experience at any of the locations, get a map, and work at their own pace through the experience,” said Sharon Wirth, Glimpse Inside chairperson. “All the featured locations are functioning businesses and homes, and each property showcases adaptations that were made throughout the decades to best fit current day standards.”
Glimpse Inside locations are Ames History Museum, 416 Douglas Ave.; Avec Design + Build, 131 Main St.; KHOI Community Radio, 622 Douglas Ave.; Ames Post Office, 525 Kellogg Ave.; Ames United Church of Christ, 217 Sixth St.; Kate Gregory home, 803 Kellogg Ave.; Nick Howell home, 918 Burnett Ave.; Ames Tribune Building, 317 Fifth St.; Potter’s Shoppe and Eatery, 330 Fifth. St.; and The Recipe, 412 Burnett Ave.
Hosts at each location will provide additional information about the property, stories about how people connected to the locations helped to shape Ames, and details about how the structures have been preserved, restored, and adapted for use today.
