Residential Curbside Recycling Begins in July
Published on June 19, 2026
AMES, Iowa – A major shift in waste reduction and resource conservation begins in July as every-other-week residential curbside recycling service starts for eligible Ames households. The new program will serve single-family homes and multi-family properties with up to four units, making recycling more convenient while helping divert valuable materials from the waste stream.
The monthly recycling fee of $7.75 will appear on City utility bills beginning in July. Aspen Waste, the City’s recycling collection contractor, has completed distribution of blue recycling carts to participating properties. Residents can begin filling their carts immediately. Scheduled collection begins the week of July 1.
"Launching curbside recycling is an important investment in Ames’ future," said Mark Peebler, Superintendent of the Ames Resource Recovery Plant. "By making recycling more convenient, we are helping residents reduce waste, recover valuable materials, conserve landfill space, and create long-term environmental and economic benefits for our community."
Residents should place accepted recyclable materials directly into the blue cart, including glass containers, mixed paper, cardboard, metal cans, and plastic containers with screw-top lids. Materials should be placed loose in the cart, not bagged. Recycling guidelines are stamped on the cart lid for easy reference. Residents who have questions about the program, collection schedules, accepted materials, or other recycling-related topics are encouraged to visit www.CityOfAmes.org/recycling.
The webpage includes frequently asked questions, collection information, an interactive map showing collection days by address, and an online form for submitting questions or concerns. The website also includes information about the City's walk-up service application for residents who need assistance moving their recycling cart to and from the curb because of a qualifying physical limitation.
Properties with more than four residential units are not included in this initial phase of the program. Owners of larger multi-family properties are encouraged to work with private haulers to provide recycling opportunities for their residents.
The curbside recycling program is part of the City's ongoing efforts to reduce waste, recover resources, and provide sustainable services that benefit both residents and the environment.
