AMES, Iowa – Ames residents are asked to share their thoughts on how pedestrians, bicyclists, and wheeled-users access public streets, sidewalks, shared-use paths, and park trails. The feedback will be used to inform future policies and guidelines. The online survey is available at Bicycle and Personal Transportation Devices Use Survey through Friday, May 16.

The survey includes questions about a participant’s use of, and/or encounters with users of bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, electric skateboards, shared bicycle fleets, one-wheel, and electric pedal-assisted bicycles. These various modes of transportation are often grouped into one category called “personal transportation devices” or PTDs.

“The use of so many types of devices makes it difficult to develop a one-size-fits-all policy, but gathering data will help us identify safety concerns and prioritize our focus,” said Assistant City Manager Pa Vang Goldbeck.

The survey results, along with other data, will be included in a report to the Ames City Council expected in the summer. The Council will be considering updates to ordinances to ensure pedestrians, PTDs, and bicyclists have safe access to public transportation routes and recreation options. Any ordinances considered by the Ames City Council would require additional opportunities for public feedback.
