Emma McCarthy Lee Trail Flood Damage

The trail connecting Emma McCarthy Lee Park and Oakland Street is closed indefinitely due to unsafe conditions caused by recent flooding. Heavy rainfall in the Ames area from July 1-3 caused Clear Creek to overflow its banks, resulting in streambank erosion that washed away portions of the trail.

“We know this trail is used by many residents and visitors for recreation and as a commuting route to and from Iowa State University, but it is not safe for use in its current condition,” said Parks and Facilities Superintendent Joshua Thompson.

Staff will work with other City departments to evaluate the damage and determine the next course of action, Thompson added.

At this time, there is no timeline for reopening the trail, and it has not yet been determined whether the damaged sections can be restored.

For safety reasons, the public is asked to obey all trail closure signs and fencing and avoid entering the closed area. Trail users should plan to use alternative routes until further notice.
