Ames Fire responds to structure fire

The Ames Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2801 Grand Ave. at about 4 p.m. today (May 21). Multiple callers reported black smoke coming from the roof near the main entrance of North Grand Mall.

Upon arrival, crews quickly accessed the roof and found flames and smoke coming from the ventilation hood exhaust system serving Flame & Skewer restaurant. Interior crews also encountered smoke inside the restaurant. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Firefighters then conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and had not spread further into the building.

The Ames Police Department assisted with evacuating the building during the incident. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
