Ames, Iowa — The Ames Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 250 S. Franklin Avenue at 4:42 p.m. on Tuesday. Flames were reported in an upstairs bedroom when crews were dispatched.
According to the homeowner, the smoke detectors started sounding, prompting her to investigate. Upon discovering an active fire in the second-story bedroom, she closed the door to contain the fire, then safely evacuated her 4 children, one dog, and one cat. She then used a fire extinguisher to knock down the flames before firefighters arrived. Fire crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire and performed extensive overhaul and salvage operations to ensure the fire was fully out. No occupants were injured, though two cats unfortunately perished in the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
One firefighter was evaluated on scene by Mary Greeley Medical Center paramedics but was not transported to the hospital.
This week marks Fire Prevention Week, and this incident serves as an important reminder of how working smoke detectors, quick thinking, and knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can save lives. Closing a door behind you can significantly slow the spread of smoke and fire, providing valuable time for safe evacuation and response.
