Ames ‘Fire Station No. 2 Spotlight’ Events to Highlight Relocation
Published on September 23, 2025
AMES, Iowa – The Ames Fire Department encourages residents to learn more about the proposed relocation of Fire Station No. 2, located at 132 Welch Ave., by attending a “Fire Station No. 2 Spotlight” event. The first Spotlight will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, followed by another from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
These events will provide an opportunity for community members to tour the current facility, talk with firefighters, enjoy refreshments, and learn more about the bond referendum appearing on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Relocating Fire Station No. 2 from Welch Avenue west to a new site on State Avenue is designed to:
- Enhance public safety with faster emergency response times.
- Reduce traffic conflicts in Campustown.
- Expand service coverage to Ames’ growing neighborhoods.
- Build a modern, efficient, and health-focused facility for firefighters.
- Strengthen the City’s long-standing partnership with Iowa State University. (ISU is providing the land at no cost.)
- Create redevelopment opportunities at the Welch Avenue site.
“Station No. 2 has served our community well since 1966, but the time has come for a modern facility that better positions us for today and tomorrow. This is an opportunity for residents to see the limitations of the current facility prior to the Nov. 4 bond referendum,” said Fire Chief Rich Higgins. “We are also excited to share information about the proposed new site located on State Avenue.”
