Water Meter Division

The Water Meter Division is dedicated to serving citizen of Ames and keeping the City’s water meters as accurate as possible.
Water Meter's responsibilities include:
Revenue & Payments
Water meters are the “cash registers” for the water and wastewater (sewer) utility, so their accuracy is of vital importance to the utility and its customers. Revenues generated from the meters support the Water & Pollution Control Department’s operations and projects. These revenues also fund maintenance of the City’s water distribution and sewer collection systems, as well as meter-reading and billing activities.
While Water Meter provides the consumption data, Utility Billing (515-239-5120) should be contacted first in regards to payments.
Servicing & Reading Meters
The Water Meter Division maintains all of the water meters throughout the City. All in-service water meters are regularly replaced by the City to maintain accuracy, ensuring water and sewer bills are correct for all customers. Replacing meters is the primary scope of work for the Water Meter Technicians. If residents have further concerns, they are welcome to contact Water Meter.
An Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) system is being installed in Ames. The meters are being replaced so they are compatible with the new system. This will enable City staff to read the meters remotely and remove the need to step on the property to obtain meter readings.
