Hyland Avenue Reconstruction

Project Description 

The City of Ames has contracted with All Star Concrete for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Hyland Avenue. The project will include three stages of full PCC pavement replacement from Ontario Street to Pammel Drive, as well as patching and rehabilitation at select locations between Pammel Drive and Lincoln Way. As part of the project, the existing bike lanes on Hyland Avenue from Ontario Street to Oakland Street will be removed from the roadway and relocated to a new shared use path along the west side of Hyland Avenue.

Stage 1 (Completed Fall 2025)

This stage will included pavement replacement, utility improvements, and construction of a new shared use path along the west side of Hyland Avenue. Hyland patching, north of Oakland Ave completed Fall 2025.

Bicycle Detour 

The sidewalk and bike lanes of Hyland Ave between Ontario St and Oakland Street will be closed of the length of the project. The recommended detour for Cyclists would be using Ontario St, North Dakota and Lincoln way to avoid the closure area on Hyland Ave.

2026 Project Actions 

Stage 2 

Anticipated start date of April 20, 2026. Hyland Avenue will remain open to through traffic. A temporary traffic signal will be used to control alternating northbound and southbound traffic in the southbound lane. This stage will extend from 1015 Hyland Avenue to the south side of Pammel Drive and will include pavement replacement and utility improvements. Only the east side of the roadway will be reconstructed during  this stage. The anticipated duration is 6-7 weeks, weather dependent.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will shift alternating signal-controlled traffic to the northbound lane of Hyland Avenue. This stage will extend from 1015 Hyland Avenue to the south side of Pammel Drive and will include pavement replacement, utility improvements, and continued construction of the shared-use path on the west side of Hyland Avenue. The shared-use path will be constructed up to Oakland Ave.
