Current Codes

The State of Iowa and City of Ames adopt model codes and standards, as do most cities and states nationwide. Below are the adopted model codes which have been amended for specific local differences, such as climate, frost, snow, seismic conditions, wind conditions, and administrative procedures:

  • 2024 International Building Code (IBC)
  • 2024 International Residential Code (IRC)
  • 2024 International Existing Building Code (IEBC)
  • 2024 International Fire Code (IFC)
  • 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)
  • 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC)
  • 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
  • State of Iowa Electrical Code
  • Iowa Code on Manufactured and Modular Structures
  • Accessibility: ICC A117.1-2009
  • Current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards as referenced by the International Fire Code

The City of Ames has amended some of the above codes. These amendments and administrative procedures for permitting and inspections can be found in Chapter 5 of the City of Ames Municipal Code. The codes are minimum safety standards for the construction of buildings and the systems that are essential to the functioning of buildings.

The model codes are available for public view at the Inspection Division office. They can also be viewed online or purchased at most major book stores.
