The City of Ames is considering a Pet Licensing Program to protect pets, protect people, and strengthen the services that support animal health and safety in our community.
A pet license is an annual registration for dogs and cats that includes:
The proposal sets licenses at $12 per year for altered (spayed or neutered) pets and $24 per year for unaltered (not spayed or neutered) pets.
License fees help support the Ames Animal Shelter and Animal Control services, including lost-and-found reunification, investigations of neglect or cruelty, nuisance response, wildlife assistance, and care for animals in need. As a “No Kill Shelter,” Ames must maintain high standards of care.
The Pet Licensing Program strengthens public safety, supports responsible pet ownership, and helps keep Ames a compassionate place for animals and people.
A pet license is a simple, annual registration for dogs and cats that includes owner information, proof of rabies vaccination, and a unique identification number that can be traced 24/7 by the Ames Animal Shelter and Ames Police Department.
Ames is one of only two large cities in Iowa without a licensing program and the only university community without one. Licensing improves public safety, speeds up reunification of lost pets, confirms rabies vaccinations, and helps fund critical animal services.
Only cats and dogs would require licenses under this program. No other pets.
The proposal sets licenses at $12 per year for altered pets and $24 per year for unaltered pets.
Microchips are valuable but require staff to look up the number in one of several national databases, which may not be current. A license tag can be traced instantly by Ames Animal Shelter or Ames Police, even after hours, and provides a second layer of protection.
Licensed pets are held longer at the shelter before being placed for adoption, giving owners more time to reclaim them. A license tag and microchip together offer the best chance of a fast return home.
Yes. A license confirms your pet is vaccinated. Rabies is a fatal disease and a current threat in Iowa wildlife. Licensing ensures compliance with state rabies vaccination laws.
Funds help provide:
This shifts costs from all taxpayers to the pet owners who use these services.
Yes. Indoor cats can escape unexpectedly. Licensing ensures they can be traced quickly and confirms rabies vaccination.
Each license is valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
