New Ames Animal Shelter building

The new facility at 2715 Dayton Ave. will include:

  • Additional and increased variety of housing spaces
  • Surgical area for spays and neuters
  • Exercise areas for dogs
  • Multi-purpose room for events and community engagement
  • Additional rooms for socializing animals

The City of Ames has purchased the property and existing building at 2715 Dayton Ave., the former location of the Eagles Loft Childcare Center. The property sits on 5.59 acres. The construction plan is to renovate and expand the existing building. The new animal shelter building is anticipated to be 4-5x larger than the existing animal shelter at 325 Billy Sunday Road.

Construction costs are estimated to be between $7.5-8 million dollars. The Ames City Council has allocated $3 million, and private donors have contributed an additional $3 million. The Shelter is seeking to close the funding gap through financial donations.

A new animal sheltering facility will allow the Ames Animal Shelter to:

  • Provide modern, stress-reducing, best practice, healthy, and progressive housing for animals
  • Provide more functional and supportive spaces for staff, volunteers, and shelter visitors
  • Expand opportunities for residents and volunteers to benefit from animal-related educational programs
  • Create public areas that are warm and inviting, and promote volunteerism, adoption, fostering, humane education, and sense of community for people that love animals
  • Better support our no-kill mission by providing the best possible resources for sheltered animals
  • Offer more programs that help pets to stay in their homes with the people that love them
