Understanding Your Utility Bill

The City of Ames is inviting residents to an “Understanding Your Utility Bill” event on Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 515 Clark Ave., in the first-floor lobby. The open-house style event will help customers learn how to read their statements, understand where their money goes, and identify opportunities to reduce monthly costs.

Attendees will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a free smart thermostat. These devices are a great tool for managing home energy use and lowering monthly utility bills. A smart thermostat allows users to adjust a home’s temperature from anywhere using a smartphone and can be programmed to reduce energy use at specific times of the day.

“Understanding your Ames utility bill is not only important for knowing what you pay, but also for finding ways to reduce your bill each month,” said Nolan Sagan, Sustainability Coordinator. “There are many helpful items on bills that residents might not know are there.”

In addition to bill navigation and cost savings, City staff will be on hand to share information about new utility programs. Attendees can learn about no-cost home weatherization, time-of-use rates, and curbside recycling.
