Contractor Registration Requirements

Plumbing and Mechanical contractors working in Ames must be registered and licensed as follows:

Register with the State of Iowa Division of Labor
Have a Master and a Contractor License issued by the State of Iowa Department of Public Health

Permit applications can be submitted in person at the Inspections office, emailed to inspections@cityofames.org, or online through the CSS Portal.

Homeowner Plumbing Permit Application(XLSX, 90KB) (The Ames Municipal Code waives licensing requirements to allow homeowners to do building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work on their existing, owner occupied, single family structure. All work must be in accordance with current model codes adopted by the State of Iowa and City of Ames.)
