The City of Ames is inviting residents to help grow the local urban tree canopy through the Branching Out Tree Giveaway event on Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ames Water Treatment Plant, 1800 E. 13th St.
To support community sustainability, the City will distribute 275 free native trees. Pre-ordering is required, and supplies are limited. Residents can pre-order up to five trees per household at www.CityofAmes.org/TreeGiveaway by Thursday, April 9. Species available are Buttonbush (Cephalantus occidentalis), American Plum (Prunus americana), Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra), Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus).
“Expanding our tree canopy is a simple way to invest in sustainability,” said Nolan Sagan, Sustainability Coordinator. “Trees can help lower heating and cooling costs, increase stormwater retention, and prevent runoff, all while beautifying the community.”
Trees must be planted on private property. When planting, avoid the public right-of-way and interference with any structures and underground utilities.
Visit www.CityOfAmes.org/trees for more information on planting trees.
