Invitation for groundbreaking ceremony of R3C facility

The public is invited to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Resource Recovery and Recycling Campus (R3C) at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 at the project site, 220 Freel Drive. The new facility represents a transformational step forward in how Ames and participating Story County communities handle waste disposal and recycling.

Located on 9.5 acres along Freel Drive, the future R3C facility will replace the City’s Arnold O. Chantland Resource Recovery Plant (RRP). For 50 years, the RRP has processed garbage into fuel for the Ames Power Plant.

The modernized R3C will serve as a central location for municipal solid waste (MSW), recyclables (both separated and commingled), and yard waste. This updated approach is designed to enhance efficiency, increase recycling opportunities, and support a more sustainable future for Ames and surrounding communities. The new campus and system include a residential curbside recycling system for Ames beginning July 1. Because processing and transferring MSW is expensive, removing as much recyclable material before processing is key to reducing cost for all Ames residents.
