GIS

GIS enables us to analyze geographic data and make informed decisions.”

– Jack Dangermond, President/Founder, Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI)

What is GIS?

Geographic Information system (GIS) is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data.

GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication, efficiency, management, and decision-making.

How Do We Use GIS at the City of Ames?

The City of Ames uses GIS to visually analyze and manage geographic data, allowing us to effectively plan infrastructure projects, identify community needs, track assets, respond to emergencies, and make informed decisions based on spatial relationships between different data points, like population density, land use, and environmental factors across our jurisdiction.
