Frequently Asked Questions

How can I ensure my building project meets accessibility requirements?

Contact the Inspection Division at 515-239-5153 to discuss the accessibility requirements in the adopted construction codes.

What does the City's ADA Coordinator do?

The ADA Coordinator reviews the accessibility of programs and services offered by the City and facilitates solutions to accessibility concerns. Programs offered by other organizations (not the City of Ames) are not able to be addressed by the City's ADA Coordinator. If you have a concern about a program not offered by the City of Ames, it's best to start with the organizers of that program to see if a solution can be identified.

What should I expect if I express a concern about accessibility of City programs or services?

If you contact the City with a concern about the accessibility of a City program, expect that first you'll be asked some questions so we can understand the situation. Please know that the City is committed to providing programs and services in a manner that is compliant with the law and as effective as possible for all of its residents. We may need to consult with the staff members who administer the program to understand what options are available. Our staff members are caring and approachable, so feel free to ask for the person in charge of a facility or program if you have a concern about accessibility; they may be able to resolve the concern quickly for you. Otherwise, you may also contact the City-wide ADA Coordinator at the contact information indicated above. Solutions to accessibility issues may involve providing services in an alternative, accessible location, making modifications to forms or facilities, or providing auxiliary aids. We will do our best to resolve your concerns in a timely manner.

What should I do if I am being discriminated against because of my disability?

Discrimination on the basis of disability is unlawful under Iowa law and the Municipal Code. If you believe you are being discriminated against by an employer, local business, educational or credit institution, or housing provider because of your disability, you can file a complaint with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. The City Manager's Office can guide you through the process to file a complaint. Please visit our Human Relations Commission page for more information, or consult the Iowa Civil Rights Commission at www.icrc.iowa.gov.
