As part of our environmental review by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and in order to proceed with the improvements at North River Valley Park low-head dam, City staff hired a consultant to relocate mussels in the South Skunk River in the project area.
Many mussels including two state-threatened mussel species, Creek Heelsplitter and Cylindrical Papershell, were found and relocated to protect them during construction.
Divers were used to help locate the mussels.
(Ames High School students got an impromptu lesson on mussels while they were out onsite on October 23, 2017)
