What Physical Fitness Testing Can I Expect?

Physical Ability Test

The occupation of Firefighter is a physically demanding profession.  The Ames Fire Department physical fitness entry test is designed to assess a candidates aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, muscular strength and endurance.  These fitness areas are predictive factors to determine a person’s ability to perform essential functions of the job. 

 The test will consist of the following:

  • 300 meter sprint
  • 1 minute maximum push-up (full body push-up)
  • 1 minute maximum sit-ups
  • 1.5 mile run
