The City of Ames employs more than 500 dedicated staff members in 18 departments and divisions to serve the residents of Ames. The City of Ames is a full-service local government which includes utilities such as Ames Electric Services, Ames Water Plant, and Ames Water Pollution Control. Our emergency response team includes Ames Fire Department, Ames Police Department and our Emergency Communications Center. Other City of Ames departments include Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Planning and Housing, Legal, Human Resources, Finance, and Fleet.

The Ames Public Library is a municipal library that operates under the leadership of the Library Board of Trustees. Additionally, our community-wide public transit system, CyRide, is a partnership between the City of Ames, Iowa State University, and ISU's Student Government.

The Clerk of Court office located in City Hall is a part of the State of Iowa Judicial Branch and the Clerk and staff are employees of the State of Iowa. The Clerk of Court phone number is 515-239-5140.

Chief Richard Higgins has been with the Ames Fire Department since 2002.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006, to Shift Commander in 2009, and Deputy Fire Chief in 2012.  Before coming to the Ames Fire Department, Richard worked for the City of Ames, in the Public Works Utility Maintenance Department.

Chief Higgins received his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Des Moines Area Community College.  He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Indiana State University .  He is also certified by the State of Iowa as a Firefighter II, Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Inspector I, Driver Operator/Pumper, Confined Space and Hazardous Materials Technician.

Chief Higgins is very involved in Hazardous Materials Response and Water Rescue training for the department.  When not on duty, Richard enjoys spending time with his family, woodworking, golf, fishing and listening to music.
