Next Phase of South Fifth Street Extension Starts Aug. 6
The third phase of the construction of the extension of South Fifth Street will begin Thursday, Aug. 6, weather permitting. The City of Ames has contracted with Peterson Contractors Inc. (PCI) to complete these improvements.
The third phase of the project will involve reconstruction of the intersection of South Walnut Avenue and South Fifth Street. This intersection will be closed during work on this phase, which is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. Traffic should detour to South Duff Avenue during the intersection closure.
In addition, subcontractor Con-Struct Inc. will begin paving the extension of South Fifth Street westward from just west of the Boys and Girls Club to South Grand Avenue (phases 1, 2, and 3) on Monday, Aug. 10.
Those living or traveling in the area should use caution around the construction activity and allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As with all paving operations, saw cutting of joints in newly poured pavement is critical and it may be disruptive beyond normal work hours. For safety reasons, please keep children and pets away from the construction zone.
