Glass and Food Waste Self-Serve Disposal Offered at Resource Recovery

Post Date:03/26/2020 2:30 PM
The Ames Resource Recovery Plant, 110 Center Ave., remains open for commercial trash haulers, but is closed to the public through May 15. Public customers still have access to glass recycling and Food Waste Diversion program disposal options by using bins located adjacent to the closed car lane.
To dispose of container glass such as jelly, salsa or pickle jars, use the large yellow glass recycling bin on the north side of the building. Bins are also located around Story Country including area grocery stores and the Ames Hy-Vee gas stations.
To dispose of food waste, use the orange rolling tote next to the glass bin. Although the Food Waste Diversion pilot project required participants to purchase a punch card to dispose of food waste, the cost has been waived. There is no cost to participate. In order to create usable compost, only compostable food scraps and organics should be deposited in the orange bin.
“These are challenging times, but we can still reduce food waste through not overbuying groceries and saving food preparation remnants like fruit or vegetable peels, eggshells, and coffee grounds for composting,” said Bill Schmitt, Resource Recovery Plant Superintendent.
