City of Ames Extends Closures and Postponements in Response to COVID-19

Post Date:03/16/2020 12:00 PM

The City of Ames is announcing additional closures and postponements that will be taken in response to the COVID-19 virus.

Beginning Monday, March 16, through May 15, 2020, Ames Parks and Recreation classes will be cancelled. Ames City Auditorium, Ames Community Center, Ames/ISU Ice Arena, Ames Dog Park, and Municipal Pool will be closed during this period. Additionally, the Ames Public Library has announced it will be closed beginning Tuesday, March 17, through May 15, 2020.

The Ames Animal Shelter will also be closed for tours and visits Monday, March 16, through May 15, 2020. However, animals available for adoption will be listed online and residents may call to schedule an adoption appointment.

City-sponsored events including the Ames Film Festival brainstorming meeting on March 25, EcoChat on March 30, Chad Pregracke lecture on April 21, and EcoFair on April 25, are all cancelled at this time. Some of these events may be rescheduled at a later date.

As was previously announced, all tours of City facilities and use of City building meeting rooms by outside groups will be discontinued.

Residents are encouraged to conduct City business online or by phone if possible, rather than coming to City Hall or other City offices.

The suspension of City building meeting rooms does not include City board or commission meetings or the City Council, but City staff is evaluating options to move some of these meetings to a conference call format.

As the spread of the virus continues to evolve, citizens should expect other changes in services as the City’s response to the COVID-19 virus is implemented.
