Metronet, Inc., an Indiana-based fiber optic internet provider, is beginning the installation of internet infrastructure in Ames this month. Crews will be installing cable underground and on overhead poles throughout the Ames community. The construction is expected to be completed in the fall. Like other telecommunications providers, Metronet may install its cable underground in the public right of way.
The right of way is the area between the back edge of the curb and the edge of the sidewalk furthest from the street. If there is no sidewalk, the right of way generally extends 15 feet from the back edge of the curb. Metronet is required to restore any right of way damaged during the construction process. In addition, junction boxes will be permanently placed along the fiber lines to distribute the fiber to homes.
Residents will receive notice of upcoming construction activity in their neighborhood through mailings and yard markers provided by Metronet. Metronet’s construction crews can be identified by ID badges and marked vehicles.
Residents who have questions or concerns regarding the construction, right of way restoration, or damage caused during the installation process are encouraged to contact Metronet directly. Videos explaining Metronet’s construction process can be found at www.metronetinc.com/construction
