Story County residents can dispose of yard waste at no charge during Fall No-Charge Yard Waste Days planned in November. The scheduled Saturdays are Nov. 2, Nov. 9 (includes brush), Nov. 16, and Nov. 30, at GreenRU (formerly Chamness Technology), 400 Freel Drive. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New this year is a voucher option for those unable to take advantage of the Saturday, Nov. 9, drop-off date, which includes brush. A single-use voucher may be picked up in advance at the Resource Recovery Plant, 110 Center Ave. This voucher may be used from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, Monday, Nov. 11, or Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 400 Freel Drive. The voucher must be redeemed at time of disposal.
Those participating in Fall No-Charge Yard Waste Days are asked to enter the site from Dayton Avenue, then west on Southeast Fifth Street, and north on Freel Drive. Drivers should exit the site north on Freel Drive to Lincoln Way. Please follow GreenRU's rules for proper yard waste disposal. For additional information or questions, call GreenRU at 515.450.0450 and leave a message.
Yard waste is not accepted at the Resource Recovery Plant. The RRP receives garbage from Ames and the surrounding communities in Story County for processing. Metals are extracted and sold for recycling. The remainder is shredded by machines, and the burnable portion becomes Refused Derived Fuel (RDF). RDF is piped to the City's power plant and used with natural gas to generate electricity.
