Work to replace the Alliant Energy gas main under two alleys in Downtown Ames will begin this week. The alleys affected are from Kellogg Avenue to Burnett Avenue between Main Street and Fifth Street, and from Duff Avenue to Douglas Avenue between Main Street and Fifth Street. All or portions of each alley will be closed to all traffic at various times throughout the project duration.
Alliant Energy has contracted with Q3 to complete the gas main replacement, and the City has contracted with ConStruct to complete alley pavement reconstruction. Q3 will remove sections of alley pavement and install new gas main and some services in both alleys. The trenches will be backfilled with rock until ConStruct reconstructs the alleys.
The gas main project is expected to be completed within four to six weeks. Reconstruction of the alleys, which will begin after the gas main project is done, is expected to be completed within approximately three months.
All are encouraged to take note of construction activity and exercise caution when traveling near the construction area. For safety reasons, please keep children and pets away from the construction zone.
