Schildroth Named Assistant City Manager

Following a national recruitment and a comprehensive recruiting process, Debra Schildroth has been selected the new Assistant City Manager for the Assistant City Manager Debra Schildroth City of Ames. Schildroth, currently the Director of External Operations and County Services for Story County, Iowa, replaces Bob Kindred who retired after more than 38 years of service. 
“We are confident Deb will be a terrific addition to the City of Ames. Her education and previous work experience provide a different perspective to serving our citizens, and we welcome the leadership, connections, and expertise she brings to this position,” said City Manager Steve Schainker. “Deb’s background in supervision, management, and budgeting provide a diverse background that we believe will serve her well as the City moves forward on challenging projects and ongoing programs.” 
More than 70 applications were received for the position. The Assistant City Manager assists in coordinating City operations, supporting City boards and commissions, and achieving goals established by the City Council. Schildroth will begin her new position on Monday, July 1. 
Schildroth began her career with Story County Community Services, first as a Case Manager (1991 to 1992), then as Assistant Director (1992 to 2000), and as Director (2000 to 2015). From 2014 to 2015, she served concurrently as Director of Story County Community Services and as the Chief Executive Officer of Central Iowa Community Services. Schildroth was also a Direct Care Worker for the Story County Community Life Program from 1990 to 1991. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Iowa State University.
