The FAST Act eliminates the MAP-21 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and replaces it with a set-aside of Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program funding for transportation alternative projects. These set-aside funds include all projects and activities that were previously eligible under TAP, encompassing a variety of smaller-scale transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, safe routes to school projects, community improvements such as historic preservation and vegetation management, and environmental mitigation related to stormwater and habitat connectivity.
The Ames Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) administers the STBG-TAP regional program for areas within the Ames-Gilbert planning area. To apply for these funds, project sponsors must submit an application to the Ames Area MPO by March 31, 2019. The application for the STBG-TAP program are available on the Iowa Department of Transportation website.
Projects which received Federal funding are required to be in the regional Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The current LRTP is known as Ames Mobility 2040 and was adopted by the MPO Policy Committee in late 2015. Successful applications will be included in the FY 2020-2023 Transportation Improvement Program, which will be approved in the Summer of 2019. For additional information, contact Tony Filippini, AICP, Transportation Planner at (515) 239-5169 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications for regional STBG-TAP funds can be submitted to the Ames Area MPO via e-mail by the deadline of March 31, 2019.
