A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new outdoor ice skating rink donated to the City of Ames by the Iowa Wild hockey team and Wells Fargo will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at South River Valley Park, 1200 E. 13th St. Members of the Ames City Council, the Ames Parks and Recreation Commission, and representatives from the Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo will make brief remarks before cutting the ribbon and officially opening the outdoor skating rink. The public is welcome to attend.
The donated rink, along with the rink formerly installed at Homewood Golf Course, will allow Ames Park and Recreation to assemble two ices rinks at South River Valley Park. The ice rink was donated as part of an effort to encourage more ice skating and outdoor recreation. One rink will be reserved for hockey and the other for skating. Skaters need to bring their own equipment. The rinks will be located in the green space south of 13th Street, and will be open as long as weather permits and the ice remains frozen. There is no fee to use either ice rink, and parking is available.
“These rinks provide a great opportunity for residents to enjoy outdoor winter recreation,” said Keith Abraham, Parks and Recreation Director. “We appreciate the donation by the Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo because it allows both hockey players and recreational skaters to have ice time.”
The Parks and Recreation Department manages 36 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional and wellness programs. Indoor programs are offered year-round at the Community Center, Ames/ISU Ice Arena, and Municipal Pool.
