Ames Fire Department Responds to RDF Bin Fire
Ames Fire Department responded to fire at the Resource Recovery refuse derived fuel (RDF) bin, located at the corner of East Third Street and East Avenue, at approximately 9:35 a.m. today. An Ames Electric Services employee saw smoke and fire coming from the top of the bin and contacted emergency services. Fire crews arrived and contained the fire. Crews remain onsite to assist with clean up and are monitoring hot spots.
Ames Electric Services staff continues to assess the damage and determine the cause. There is no immediate damage estimate. There were no injuries reported.
“We hope to have the bin functioning and begin using RDF fuel in the Power Plant today,” said Donald Kom, Director, Ames Electric Services.
“Please remember to safely dispose of flammable materials,” said Deputy Fire Chief Paul Sandoval. “Many items don’t belong in the trash and create hazards when processed at the Resource Recovery Plant.”
Batteries, fireworks, and flammable chemicals can be dropped off at no cost at the Resource Recovery Plant, 110 Center Ave., during business hours.
