Healthy Life Center Receives $3 Million From Fitch Family

Post Date:05/24/2018 11:00 AM
The Healthy Life Center Capital Campaign announced today the Healthy Life Center is the recipient of a $3-million donation from the Richard Group of people (Fitch family) posing around a large checkand Mary Fitch family. Building on their family legacy of philanthropy, the Fitches expressed the hope that their investment would spur others to get involved in the proposed intergenerational wellness facility.

“A few years ago my wife’s parents, Donald and Ruth Furman, donated $2 million to ensure the Furman Aquatic Center became a reality, and it’s been wonderful to see so many residents embrace that facility. Mary and I feel fortunate to give back to our community in a way that will benefit a healthy lifestyle for all ages. It is our dream that the community rally behind the Healthy Life Center,” said Rich Fitch.

The announcement of the donation was made during a press conference held at Reiman Gardens and hosted by the Healthy Life Center Capital Campaign.

The City of Ames has partnered with Mary Greeley Medical Center, Iowa State University, Des Moines Area Community College, Story County, and Heartland Senior Services to explore building an intergenerational Healthy Life Center on Scholl Road, just north of Ontario Street. The HLC will have a holistic, intergenerational approach focused on "Live Well/Be Well" by combining an active lifestyle, health and nutrition, and social networking with education and applied student learning as an all-encompassing ideal.

“This is a tremendous gift that signifies a huge step forward in our fundraising efforts. We truly value Mary and Rich’s leadership gift and are delighted that the Fitch family supports the Healthy Life Center and its commitment to helping our citizens live happy, healthy lives,” said Capital Campaign Chair Ann Campbell.

When the philanthropic goal of approximately $18.2 million is met, the City of Ames will hold a bond referendum. If passed, residents will realize the value of a $48.7 million complex for a $17 million investment.

Active lifestyle features include a warm water pool with six lanes for lap swimming, water slides, current channel, zero-depth entry with children’s play structure, therapy pool, aerobics room, cardio/fitness equipment, two gymnasiums, children’s indoor and outdoor playgrounds, and physical therapy room. The health and nutrition features include teaching/participation kitchen, outdoor community gardens, adult day center for seniors, public meeting rooms, SHIIP Counseling Office (Senior Health Insurance Information Program). The social networking features include a cafe/lobby and gathering space, arts, crafts, and music room; multi-purpose rooms; and child fun/drop-in childcare.
