Resource Recovery
What We Do Accept
Resource Recovery offers one free day in the spring and one in
the fall. Regular household garbage is accepted on these free
days.
What are regular household and commercial garbage items?
- Newspapers, waste paper
- Product packaging
- Plastics
- Furniture
- Carpets/rugs
- Broken toys
- Things that you might normally put in your kitchen garbage
can
Also Accepted:
- Furniture may be disposed of for the standard fee.
- Glass is abrasive and grinding it is hard on equipment; it
also creates slag in the utility boilers. Customers bringing any
color container glass to the plant may deposit it at no charge.
It may also be deposited at no charge in bright yellow recycling
bins at Fareway, Cub Foods, HyVee West, Ames Area
Redemption, Prairie Moon Winery, and Fareway in Nevada. Our machinery removes any glass in your garbage from
the waste stream during processing and it is either landfilled
as a reject from our process, or it becomes slag in the utility
boilers.
- Lead-acid batteries (car and truck batteries)
- LP bottles/tanks: We will accept small handheld propane
bottles and 20 lb LP tanks; please bring these directly to the
plant.
- Appliances ($20) may include but is not limited to stove,
refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, water heater, humidifier,
dehumidifier, washer, dryer
- Tires and Rims (for a fee)
- Waste Oil is accepted free up to five gallons (each gallon
after five is $.25).
What We Do Not Accept
- Construction/demolition materials must be taken to the
Ames-Story Environmental Landfill.
- Hazardous household materials like furniture polish, drain
cleaners, auto products and pesticides are sometimes flammable,
explosive, toxic or corrosive. Use them up or safely store until
you make an appointment to dispose of at the Resource Recovery
Plant.
- Latex Paint: If there is paint in the can, open the lid and
allow it to dry or pour it into a box with kitty litter,
crumpled newspapers or old carpet and let it dry. Leave the lid
off the can; garbage haulers will pick up paint only if they can
see it's dry.
- Two-cycle gas, gasoline and other flammable liquids should
be used up or given away. Or, remove the lid and let it
evaporate in a well-ventilated area away from children and pets.
You can also bring it to your Household Hazardous Materials
appointment in an approved gasoline container.
- Yard waste such as grass clippings, branches, shrubbery and
trees should be taken to the site that is operated under
contract by All Seasons Contracting Services Inc. Call them at
515-233-8508 for open hours and fees.
