Ames residents are not currently regulated for the disposal of e-waste in landfills. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires businesses to treat computer monitors (CRTs) and TVs as hazardous waste.
Goodwill Industries, 3718 Lincoln Way, Ames, accepts TVs and computers for refurbishing/resale and recycling, at no charge.
If you're a resident and want to get rid of your own home computers or TVs, you can just throw them away. Only two units per residential customer will be accepted per day. For instance one computer system and one TV, or two computer systems or 2 TVs will be accepted per day. You will need to call your garbage hauler to find out if there's an additional charge to pick these up for you at your residence with the rest of your garbage.
