Please keep in mind these updates are subject to change at any time due to weather or various other extenuating circumstances.

Last Updated: December 4, 2009

08/09 Water System Improvements – Water Main Replacement (Kellogg)

Update:   Scheduling updates for the remaining water main replacements north of Main Street between Main and 7th will be made available as the contractor’s schedule is set.

Background: This program provides for replacing water mains in areas that are experiencing rusty water problems.  It also provides for installing larger distribution mains in areas that have a high concentration of 4” supply lines, transferring water serviced from 4” water mains in streets where larger water mains exist, and abandoning 4” water mains. Eliminating duplicate water mains, where possible, improves water flow and helps reduce rusty water.  Installing larger distribution lines in areas that have a high concentration of 4” supply lines and less than desirable fire-fighting capacity (predominately in the older areas of the community), provides larger supply quantities in relation to the current and proposed land uses, in accordance with the Land Use Policy Plan.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Jim Gammon, 515-203-0795, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

08/09 Neighborhood Curb Replacement Program

Update:  The major work on 12th Street and Harding Avenue is complete.  Project punch list items are all that remain to complete this project.  Some of the sodding on the project will be redone as part of the project punch list.

Background:  This is the annual program for replacement of deteriorated curb and gutter in selected neighborhood areas.  This year’s program is to replace curb on 12th Street from Northwestern Avenue to Harding Avenue and on Harding Avenue from 12th Street to 16th Street.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Ed Kray, 515-203-0797, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

Southwest Ames Storm Water Management Improvements (near Greenbriar Park)

Update:  The project is complete!  Monitoring turf establishment will continue through the fall.

Background:  Work includes demolition of concrete trail, fence removal, tree and shrub removal, grading of drainage channel, erosion control, installation of a 12’ x 50’ pedestrian bridge, new concrete trail, and seeding.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Scott Shepherd, 515-203-0799, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

Ames Community Development Park, 4th Addition (South Bell Avenue)

Update:  The project is nearly complete and South Bell is now open to traffic.  Final grading and seeding are complete.

Background:  This project consists of connecting S. Bell Avenue (approximately 1,314 feet in length) and constructing two cul-de-sac streets (each approximately 350 feet in length) east of S. Bell Avenue.  Included with this project is the installation of City sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water mains.  Public improvement plans also include conduit, handholes, and footings for street lights.  The project has a completion date of October 30, 2009.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Jim Gammon, 515-203-0795, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

South Duff Area Storm Sewer Reconstruction

Update:  All streets are now open to traffic!  Monitoring turf establishment will continue through the spring.

Background:  This project includes installation of storm sewer on Kellogg Avenue from Lincoln Way south to the alley, then east along the alley to Sherman Avenue, then south on Sherman Avenue to South 2nd, and then east on South 2nd to South Duff Avenue.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Ed Kray, 515-203-0797, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

08/09 CyRide Pavement Improvements (Toronto & Hutchison)

Update:  Work on Toronto is complete and open to traffic.

The contractor has decided to delay the reconstruction of Hutchison Street until spring of 2010.  Notifications will be made to residents prior to construction resuming.

The contractor will have 50 calendar days to complete each street and open it back to traffic.

Background: This is an annual program for pavement improvements to streets that are bus routes.  These streets were designed and built for light, residential traffic.  With these streets designated as bus routes, accelerated deterioration of the street surface has occurred.  Pavement improvements will restore street sections that will carry projected traffic volumes.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Scott Shepherd, 515-203-0799, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.

2009 Downtown Pavement Improvements (Kellogg Avenue)

Update:  Street work is complete and Kellogg Avenue is now open to traffic!

Work on the north portion is nearly complete. The remaining sidewalk work will continue as weather permits.

Background: This annual program is for the rehabilitation/reconstruction of streets within the downtown area (Lincoln Way to 7th Street and Grand Avenue to Duff Avenue).  The Downtown Improvements Study (1996/1997) recommended several improvement projects in the downtown area.  Since that time, Main Street 5th Street, and 6th Street have all benefited from improvement projects recommended by the Downtown Improvements Study.  These projects involved pavement reconstruction, rehabilitation of storm and sanitary sewers and streetscapes.

This project will meet the recommendation of the Downtown Improvements Study for the side streets in the downtown area.  These streets have not had any improvements in recent years.

Our engineering observer and contact for this project is Scott Shepherd, 515-203-0799, or you can contact Eric Cowles, Construction Supervisor, at 515-203-0791 with any questions.
