Organization.
The Ames Police Department employs a lead dispatcher and eight
communications operators. These people are assigned to provide
24hour radio, telephone and computer emergency services to the
citizens of Ames.
Qualifications.
Candidates for the position of police communications operator must
meet certain criteria including: completion of high school or GED
equivalency, submission of a City of Ames employment application,
successful completion of a written examination, a typing competency
test, and an oral interview. In addition, finalists will have to
undergo a background check and pass a medical examination. The final
determination for hiring is made by the chief of police.

Training.
All persons hired as police radio communications operators are
placed in a twelve week initial training phase that includes work on
all shifts. During this training the employee will be given the
information and handson experience necessary to successfully
operate a police radio network, several computer systems, the 911
emergency phone system, and many other tasks.
Upon completion of the initial training requirements, new communications operators are assigned to a specific shift and receive ongoing training in several areas. All communications operators must be trained as statecertified jailers. This program requires the successful completion of a 20 hour, state sponsored jail school and annual recertification. In order to operate the state computer system, all communications operators must complete a Basic Iowa System Training program sponsored by the state of Iowa.
In addition, radio communications operators are trained in first aid procedures, public relations, and defensive tactics.
Responsibilities.
The job of radio communications operator with the Ames Police
Department is varied and demanding. Our communications staff operate
a multichannel police and emergency services radio system. We
provide communications services for police, fire and emergency
medical services throughout the City of Ames and portions of Story
County. Communications operators answer the 911emergency phone
system. They are responsible for information gathering, prioritizing
and dispatching calls on an ongoing basis.
Duties as a jailer include assisting with the booking, processing and searching of all prisoners brought to our facility. Regular security surveillance of incarcerated persons is maintained by the communications operator.
A very important function of the communications operator is to have proficiency in the operation of several computer systems. These computers are used to store and retrieve information, including criminal history information, wanted persons, stolen items, etc.
As part of their duties, communication operators have a good deal of contact with the public. For this reason emphasis is placed on developing good communications skills and a strong customer satisfaction attitude in all of our personnel. Written reports are also an important part of the communications operator's responsibilities. Complete, well written police reports are essential to the successful completion of the communications operator's duties.
