Training.
All persons hired as police radio communications operators are placed in a twelve week initial training phase that includes work on all shifts. During this training the employee will be given the information and handson experience necessary to successfully operate a police radio network, several computer systems, the 911 emergency phone system, and many other tasks.

Upon completion of the initial training requirements, new communications operators are assigned to a specific shift and receive ongoing training in several areas. All communications operators must be trained as statecertified jailers. This program requires the successful completion of a 20 hour, state sponsored jail school and annual recertification. In order to operate the state computer system, all communications operators must complete a Basic Iowa System Training program sponsored by the state of Iowa.

In addition, radio communications operators are trained in first aid procedures, public relations, and defensive tactics.

Responsibilities.
The job of radio communications operator with the Ames Police Department is varied and demanding. Our communications staff operate a multichannel police and emergency services radio system. We provide communications services for police, fire and emergency medical services throughout the City of Ames and portions of Story County. Communications operators answer the 911emergency phone system. They are responsible for information gathering, prioritizing and dispatching calls on an ongoing basis.

Duties as a jailer include assisting with the booking, processing and searching of all prisoners brought to our facility. Regular security surveillance of incarcerated persons is maintained by the communications operator.

A very important function of the communications operator is to have proficiency in the operation of several computer systems. These computers are used to store and retrieve information, including criminal history information, wanted persons, stolen items, etc.

As part of their duties, communication operators have a good deal of contact with the public. For this reason emphasis is placed on developing good communications skills and a strong customer satisfaction attitude in all of our personnel. Written reports are also an important part of the communications operator's responsibilities. Complete, well written police reports are essential to the successful completion of the communications operator's duties.
