The Chief of Police oversees all departmental functions and programs, and his office is located in the Administration Division. Responsibilities of the staff in Administration include the following:

  • Noise Permits. The Chief of Police has been granted authority by the City Council to grant Noise Permits to residents who maybe hosting an event where the decibel limit could exceed 55 decibels, e.g., outside parties with stereo music or a live band. Criteria for the granting of such a permit has been established, and includes no arrest for the applicant or at the planned address within the past year, and no other permit already issued for the same date/time within the same block.

  • Speakers Bureau. Requests are received for speakers on a variety of topics dealing with law enforcement or tours of the Police Department. An officer with expertise in the specific area is assigned and follow-up contact with the requesting agency is made. Statistics are compiled annually to determine how many citizens were reached by the department through speaking engagements or tours.

  • Keg Permits. The Chief of Police may, under authority granted by the City Council, grant Keg Permits to residents wishing to tap more than one keg at a time providing they meet the set criteria. A packet explaining the criteria is available in the Administration area.

  • Parking Complaints. In the event you want to contest a parking ticket, you must first contact the Chief of Police or his Secretary (515) 239-5130 or jschmitt@city.ames.ia.us.  If you are unable to reach an acceptable agreement there, you may request a trial before the judge by contacting the City Attorney's Office (515) 239-5146.  Ames Municipal Code, Chapter 18 includes parking regulations.  Copies are available at the Ames Public Library, most City Hall offices or see the Legal Department's web page www.cityofames.org/attorneyweb/code.htm.
