The
Administration Division
of the Police Department is
housed with the Detective Division in the northeast
wing of City Hall at 515 Clark Avenue.
Administration staff is on duty Monday through
Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They may be
reached at 239-5130. The Chief of Police oversees
all departmental functions and programs, and his
office is located in the Administration Division.
Responsibilities of the staff in Administration
include the following:

Noise Permits.
The Chief of Police has
been granted authority by the City Council to
grant Noise Permits to residents who maybe
hosting an event where the decibel limit could
exceed 55 decibels, e.g., outside parties with
stereo music or a live band. Criteria for the
granting of such a permit has been established,
and includes no arrest for the applicant or at
the planned address within the past year, and no
other permit already issued for the same
date/time within the same block.

Speakers Bureau.
Requests are received for
speakers on a variety of topics dealing with law
enforcement or tours of the Police Department.
An officer with expertise in the specific area
is assigned and follow-up contact with the
requesting agency is made. Statistics are
compiled annually to determine how many citizens
were reached by the department through speaking
engagements or tours.

Keg Permits.
The Chief of Police may,
under authority granted by the City Council,
grant Keg Permits to residents wishing to tap
more than one keg at a time providing they meet
the set criteria. A packet explaining the
criteria is available in the Administration
area.

Parking Complaints.
In the
event you want to contest a parking ticket, you
must first contact the Chief of Police or his
Secretary (515) 239-5130 or
jschmitt@city.ames.ia.us.
If you are unable to reach an acceptable
agreement there, you may request a trial before
the judge by contacting the City Attorney's
Office (515) 239-5146. Ames Municipal
Code, Chapter 18 includes parking regulations.
