Technical Writer
Non-Civil Service/Temporary/Open Entry Announcement
General Information:
The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to fill a vacancy in
this classification at our Fleet Services Maintenance Facility.
Flexible hours between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through
Friday. Job is task or project oriented, no minimum hours required
per day. Position term: up to three years.
Under direct
supervision of department Director: update existing, or create new,
written minimum specifications for fleet vehicles and equipment.
Research technical manuals, OEM publications, and city files to
identify and set required vehicle and equipment standards. Identify
and update lists of acceptable “green” vehicles and equipment to
plan and prepare for the replacement of the city’s fleet with more
fuel efficient vehicles and equipment. Task requires discussion with
operating department staff, fleet maintenance staff, vendors
(dealers). Learn about “greening” the fleet and help explain it to
operating departments.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Preferred candidates will have a good
understanding of vehicles and options, demonstrated organizational
skills and ability to compose clear and concise written documents.
