
Civil Service/Open Entry Announcement
The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service Eligibility List for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. City of Ames Civil Service employees who are currently employed in, or who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must notify the Human Resources Department of their interest, in writing, by the application deadline.
Essential Functions:
Constructs, maintains, and repairs
electrical distribution and transmission system including stringing
and pulling wires, setting poles and anchors, and installing
transformers, crossarms, insulators, primary switches, and other
hardware; may supervise helpers and train apprentices; provides
continuous feedback to coworkers during performance of all duties;
sags primary and secondary wires; locates trouble in primary and
secondary lines, replaces fuses, and clears short circuits in
lines; builds and maintains substations, transformer banks, and
transformer platforms; connects, disconnects, and repairs service
loops; installs and connects metering equipment; trims trees; reads
and interprets blueprints and maps; operates laptop computer for map
information; prepares reports of activities; operates digger
derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment. Other
Job Functions: May serve as acting Line Foreman; installs street
light heads. Classification requires stand-by status on a
rotating basis.

Completion of an apprenticeship training program in high voltage electric transmission and distribution system repair or equivalent education and experience. Please see “Application Information” section below for submittal requirements.
Must possess a valid driver's license; must obtain a valid Type A Commercial Driver's License and any required endorsements within one month of employment.
Salary:
$31.47/hour

ALONG WITH A COMPLETED CITY OF AMES APPLICATION AND BACKGROUND WAIVER, EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Name of the company or union local where the applicant's apprenticeship training was received.
2. A copy of the applicant's certificate of apprenticeship training completion.

Completed application and apprenticeship certificate must be returned to the Human Resources Department.
Selection Process:
Exams: Pole
Climbing Test (Pass/Fail), written test and panel interview. The
written test and panel interview will be weighted equally to
determine each candidate’s score for the overall examination
process. A post-job offer physical including drug and alcohol
screens required. Individuals in the Electric Lineworker
classification are subject to drug and alcohol testing under U.S.
Department of Transportation regulations. NOTE: Persons with
ADA qualifying disabilities must submit requests for testing
accommodations to the Human Resources Department in writing prior to
the application deadline.
