FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (Classes held at the Community Center unless noted)

AQUA GENTLE WORKOUT AT GREEN HILLS: This class is for those with arthritis or those who need a more gentle form of exercise. Class focuses on individuals with injuries and arthritic conditions and works to improve flexibility, strength and overall health.

AQUA IN THE DEEP AT MUNICIPAL POOL: Let us take you to a deeper level of water fitness training. Includes water jogging, sports moves and strengthening of the core muscle. Water flotation belts are provided; however, the belt is not a life preserver and participants must be able to swim in deep water.

AQUA PRENATAL AT GREEN HILLS:  Exercising in the water is refreshing and rejuvenating!  With water supporting your growing child, you will experience improved circulation and a feeling of weightlessness.  Buoyancy also allows you to exercise on your back without restricting oxygen flow to you and your baby.  Each class includes cardio, strength training, and flexibility.  Class participants enjoying meeting other moms-to-be!

AQUA POWER WORKOUT AT GREEN HILLS: This fun water aerobics class is an overall conditioning program emphasizing cardiovascular fitness, muscle conditioning and stretching.

AQUA WARM WATER AT ISU: Warm Water Workout will provide you with a safe, moderate workout in the warm water. This class is designed to improve fitness and range of motion. This is an excellent way to stay fit and keep the aches and pains away!

AQUA WATER POWER AT MUNICIPAL POOL: Splash into fitness with a fun and effective workout! This overall conditioning program emphasizes cardiovascular fitness as well as muscle conditioning and stretching.

AQUA WORKOUT AT GREEN HILLS: This safe moderate workout is designed to improve fitness and range of motion! An excellent way to stay fit!

CARDIO PUMP:  The perfect union of cardio, muscle & music. This fun class features half cardio and half power pump using body bars, medicine balls and resistance tubes.

CORE AND BOOTY BLAST: Challenge yourself with this express workout focusing on intense core and gluteal training.  Get a sculpted core and buns of steel with this intense class targeting hips, glutes, thighs and abs!
CARDIO SCULPT: Enjoy non-stop body sculpting accompanied by heart pumping cardio interval bursts to give you the ultimate sculpting! 

DANCE FEVER: Get your groove on! It’s back! Our famous Dance Fever class features fun, get down and boogie dance choreography that will leave your heart pounding and your feet dancing! 

DANCE JAMS: If you love Zumba you’ll love our new Dance Jams! In this class we’ll dance to the hottest hits heard on the radio. No complex moves just total cardio dance fun!

FOAM ROLLER CORE & STRETCH: Use the foam roller to help relieve muscle tension. Strengthen core muscles and improve balance & flexibility.

HIIT CARDIO & CORE: This is the ultimate high intensity interval class!  This challenging cardio class alternates high intensity training with recovery.  High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) includes strength, endurance, plyometric and core exercises interspersed with intense interval training.

INSANITY GROUP CLASS:  Are you ready for the ultimate challenge.  Shaun T., developer of Insanity, uses Max Interval Training.  It's not your typical interval workout.  You'll do cardio, plyometric drills, power, resistance and core training.  

PILATES: Our Pilates class will strengthen the deep back and abdominal muscles and create muscular balance. The class will focus on core strength, alignment, breath and balance. 

PILATES BARRE: . No ballet experience required here! This intense fusion of Pilates, sculpting and ballet-based
exercises will change the way your body looks – longer, leaner and stronger!

PIYO: PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. And, we crank up the speed to deliver a true fat burning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean and incredibly defined!

POWER PUMP: Increase metabolism and burn more calories all day long with our Power Pump class. This is a strength training workout using body bars and weights. This 60-minute class works all major muscle groups.

PRENATAL AQUA @ GH - Exercising in the water is refreshing and rejuvenating! With water supporting your growing uterus, you will experience improved circulation and a feeling of weightlessness. Class participants enjoy meeting other moms to be!

R.I.P.P.E.D.: Resistance, Interval, Power, Ploymetric, Endurance, Diet. This new class offers high cardio, weight training and mixed martial arts forming a non-plateau high intensity workout!

RUN/EVENT TRAINING FALL:  Train for a 5K or 10K race with our fall training program! This six week training program ending with “Run for the Roses” 5K/10K race on October 7th, will take you from start to finish in completing a 5K or 10K road race. 
SILVERSNEAKERS® FITNESS PROGRAM :  Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles and balls are offered for resistance and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support. This format is geared towards seniors and people who have mobility issues; however all are welcome to participate. 

SPIF STRENGTH AND STRETCH: Spif Strength & Stretch is a strength training class using resistance equipment such as dumbbells, xertubes, resistaballs and body bars followed by flexibility work to give you a complete workout!

SPIF FUSION: Your favorite Spif classes with the added bonus of strength, cardio and yoga all fused together to make an incredible Spif style workout.

SPIFLIFT: Increase bone mass, improve muscular strength and enhance joint health with strength training! This class features a circuit strength-training program using Cybex weight equipment, resistance bands and dumbbells. 

STEP 101: This basic step class is geared for those who would like to learn step aerobics. The step portion will consist of 35 minutes followed by 25 minutes of strength training.

STEP BARRE FUSION: Our newest class will feature 30 minutes of basic step and power intervals followed by 30
minutes of Pilates Barre which will target every muscle group in the body to elongate and tone your entire body!

STEP INTERVAL: This high energy combo class integrates fun step combinations with intervals of power moves and strength training. An awesome workout with fun music and
energetic chorography!

Join in on this fun class! Stroller Power is a stroller fitness class where mom or dad can workout with his or her baby. It’s a great way to get in shape, be with your baby, and meet other moms or dads. While the kids are in the stroller, parents get a great workout and meet other parents who want to be active and exercise in beautiful outdoor parks. Class will meet at various parks around Ames and will include walking and toning exercises using the Xer-tubes. Exercise with your baby and stay in shape.

TAI CHI:   An introduction to the ancient Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. The course includes stretching and Qigong exercises and learning the standard 24-posture form. Emphasis is on relaxation, alertness, balance and mind-body harmony. Beginner and Intermediate levels available. This class is suitable for all ages.

TAI CHI FOR ENERGY:  Dr. Paul Lam has carefully combined the movements from Chen and Sun Styles to produce a powerful synergy in Tai Chi for Energy. This six week program will help you acquire better health and wellness, internal energy, and the ability to manage stress.

TRAMP & TRX:  Encounter integrated training using the JumpSport Fitness Trampoline and the TRX Suspension Trainer in progressions that are challenging, yet right for your current level of condition. This small group, personalized program offers the opportunity to increase strength, endurance and stamina, while incinerating calories in a format that demands core stability and tough, durable athletes. Come prepared to train and work hard

TRX TRAINING:  Join us for an incredible small group training experience. The TRX is a complete body weight training system. Because the body is suspended or placed at an angle with resistance, almost all movements include core training.

TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING: Combine full-body resistance training with continuous cardio training and you get Total Body Conditioning! This athletic workout uses a variety of equipment and is an easy to follow yet very intense workout!  

YOGA: Students of all levels are encouraged to attend. This class is designed to develop body awareness, learn basic postures and alignment and become familiar with yogic breathing techniques in a relaxing atmosphere. Classes are offered at both the Community Center and Green Hills.

YOGA BASICS:  Welcome to Yoga! This workshop is designed to familiarize beginners with basic Yoga postures and breathing techniques.

YOGA GENTLE:  Gentle Yoga invites you to increase your flexibility, strength and well being by exploring gentle movements that open and release the body.This is an ideal class for those with chronic pain or stress, those returning from illness or injury or anyone who would like a gentle approach. 

ZUMBA: Ditch the workout and join the party! Zumba is a Latin based group fitness class that combines amazing, irresistible and international music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves!  

ZUMBA GOLD: This new Zumba class is designed for the active, older adult or beginners to Zumba. Same great fun, exciting music but easier to follow and taught at a lower intensity. This class will feature some core work and stretching at the end. 

ZUMBA TONING: Zumba Toning targets body sculpting exercises using weighted toning sticks with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a strength training dance fitness party!
