Conserving natural resources and helping the environment are great goals, but sometimes it’s hard to know what to do. As the City of Ames continues to promote its EcoSmart programming and reduce its own carbon footprint, showing residents how live green is equally important. In fall 2008, the City of Ames and the Ames Community School District sponsored a forum for residents to learn how to live more sustainable lives.
Organized by A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy (AMOS), "Ames, Be Cool" featured speakers on global warming and sustainability. Attendees learned ways to save energy, build "green," conserve water, and eat more earth friendly foods. Local experts included Dr. Gene Takle, Professor of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences at Iowa State University; Dr. Fred Kirschenmann, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture; Lynnae Hentzen, Center on Sustainable Communities; Dr. Erv Klaas, Professor Emeritus of Animal Ecology, and the City of Ames’ Energy Guy Steve Wilson.
