| The Water Meter Division is part of the City of Ames Water and Pollution Control Department and is responsible for maintaining more than 16,350 existing water meters. The division is also responsible for the installation of meters on new construction. The Division is funded by revenues generated from the sale of water measured by residential and commercial meters. Measured water consumption is also the basis for determining wastewater service charges. The accuracy and accountability of these water meters are very important factors in the city's efforts to maintain competitive water and wastewater rates and to meet funding needs. As long as meters accurately measure water use, customers can be assured that they are paying only for the water and wastewater service they receive. Although the Water Meter Division's responsibility primarily begins and ends at the water meter, staff are more than happy to answer any questions customers may have about their water service. It is important that we work as a team with you, our customers, to help you get the most for your money. It is also important to remember that water is precious. We all must work together to conserve this important natural resource.
