The City of Ames Water and Pollution Control Department is looking for an Environmental Engineering Technical Assistant.  This is an internship position which will provide an excellent opportunity for practical experience in the civil and environmental engineering field, in both design and construction of water and wastewater utility infrastructure.

Primary job responsibility will include construction observation of multiple projects for the water and wastewater utility.  Potential projects include:  raw well water transmission main construction, clarifier painting, well rehabilitation, and elevated tank construction.  The department is also currently conducting an infrastructure and capacity needs assessment for the Water Treatment Plant.

Other activities may include preparation of computer-aided drafting documents (AutoCAD LT), preparation of maps (GIS/ArcMap), organizing and maintaining project records, keeping “as-built” drawings, measuring and calculating quantities for construction progress payments, assisting with plant equipment evaluations, and other sub-professional level engineering tasks.

Applicants must have some knowledge of basic construction principles as they relate to municipal water and wastewater operations, including the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.  A valid driver’s license is required.

Work hours are flexible, up to 20 hours beginning December and continuing through mid-May.  Up to 40 hours each week are available beginning in mid-May and continuing through the end of August.  Salary will be $13.50 per hour.
