Water Quality Report

EPA Office of Water

In 1999 the Environmental Protection Agency began to require public water suppliers to prepare and distribute to their customers an annual water quality report, called a Consumer Confidence Report.  Starting with the 2000 edition, the reports will be delivered to customers by July 1.  For most Ames citizens, the reports will be included with your April utility bill.  If you do not receive a utility bill, you may pick up a copy from the Water Treatment Plant, from Ames City Hall, or by downloading from this page.  Iowa State University and Xenia Rural Water will distribute the information to their customers directly.

The reports are intended to be short documents written for an audience that may be unfamiliar with the water treatment industry.  The regulations require that the following information be included in the report.

  • The source of drinking water
  • Levels of detected contaminants, corresponding Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), Maximum Contaminant Level Goals (MCLGs), and typical sources of contaminants
  • Potential health effects of contaminants violating a MCL, Health Advisory (HA), Treatment Technique (TT), or Action Level (AL)
  • Any monitoring violations during the calendar year
  • Opportunities for local public participation in drinking water related decisions, such as City Council meetings.

Ames City LogoCity of Ames Water and Pollution Control Department staff are proud to provide this information to our customers.  The Water Treatment Plant supplies the citizens of Ames, Iowa State University, and surrounding rural areas with a safe, reliable, and good-tasting supply of drinking water.
