Question Answer
Where is my water meter? The water meter is commonly located in the same area as your furnace or water heater.
Why do you need to change my meter? As a preventive maintenance, we schedule water meter replacement based on the meter's years in service or water consumption through the meter. Since the meters are the department's "cash registers," it is important the meters are maintained and registering accurately.
What is the cost to me when you replace my meter? There is no cost to you for meter maintenance.  Even if a meter should malfunction, there is no charge for a service worker to come out to repair or replace the meter.
How do I shut off my water? A valve is located inside the house on the water service near the water meter that will shut off the water.
What are those paint markings/flags in my yard? Before anyone digs, they are required to call Iowa One-Call at 1-800-292-8989 for locates. Flags and paint markings are placed to identify underground piping and cables. If these markings are present in your yard or right-of-way, it is an indication that someone is planning to dig.  It does not necessarily mean the City is going to dig; the locates could have been requested by a number of sources; including cable, gas, or telephone companies.
What is that "little round metal thing" in my yard? The round iron plate is the lid to the "curb box". It is a valve, or curb stop, for turning the water off outside. It is located underground and accessed through the curb box. Turning off the curb stop usually requires the assistance of a plumber since a special wrench is needed.  Homeowners may borrow a wrench from the Water Meter Division to turn off their curb stop if the need arises. Maintenance of the curb box is the property owner's responsibility.
What is a "yard meter" or "deduct meter"? A yard meter is a second meter installed at your home that only meters the water going to your outside hose bibbs. Sometimes called a "deduct meter" because the sewer charge is deducted from this water usage. A plumber will need to prepare your service for this meter You need to apply for Yard Meter services through Finance/Utility Customer Service.
