The two basins of concern for the citizens of Ames are the Squaw Creek basin and the South Skunk River basin.  Squaw Creek is a tributary of the South Skunk River.

Major floods have occurred several times in Ames.  The portion of town near the junction of Squaw Creek and South Skunk River experienced unprecedented flooding in 1993, with an estimated $10 million in economic loss.
